What is laser therapy?

Laser is a form of focused light energy. In medicine, laser allows surgeons to deliver powerful beam of energy with a high level of precision. The therapy is delivered using a laser energy generator [Figure 1] with various treatment probes depending on the condition of the patient [Figure 2 and Figure 3]. Laser is not new and has been around for several decades. Dr. Maher Abbas uses the latest and most advanced technology for his patients.

Another form of light energy is Infrared Coagulation [Figure 4]. Although many commercial clinics refer to it as “laser” for marketing purposes, it is not a laser.  A powerful light bulb delivers intense heat as a treatment.  Similar to laser, infrared coagulation is one of the treatment options for some proctologic disorders.

What are the benefits of laser therapy?

Both laser and infrared coagulation provide precise delivery of energy causing less pain, minimal swelling and scarring, and shorter recovery time.  For some patients, a single treatment session is enough but for others multiple treatment sessions may be necessary depending on the patient’s condition.

What conditions can be treated with laser therapy?

Several proctologic and skin conditions can be treated with laser therapy and infrared coagulation.  Such conditions include:

Are you a candidate for laser therapy?

Dr. Maher Abbas personalizes the care of every patient and customizes a treatment plan based on what is best for the patient.  As an expert surgeon, he provides a wide range of treatment for his patients.  After the initial evaluation and consultation, Dr. Maher Abbas provides a detailed plan of care.  If you are a good candidate for laser therapy or infrared coagulation, you will be advised about such options.

Laser treatment and infrared coagulation are performed in most cases on an outpatient basis (same day) in the clinic or the operating room.  The recovery is fast in most patients.  Depending on the type of procedure and your condition, you are able to resume work the following day but in some cases within a week.

Why seek expert care with a board certified proctologist and colorectal surgeon?

The anal area is a delicate part of the body.  It is important to seek care to heal, relieve symptoms, and to exclude other more serious causes of anal symptoms.  The expertise of the doctor is critical in order to ensure the best result and minimize the risk of recurrence, non-healing, infection, and developing any weakness in the anal muscle.  Proctology is a highly specialized field.

Dr. Maher Abbas is an expert in the treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus.  With over a 30-year career in the USA, he has completed advanced training in Proctology and is American Board Certified in Colon and Rectal Surgery.  Dr. Maher Abbas is a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
